I always though the Defender 90 was a Jeep wrangler sized truck...it is not, its HUGE.
My car (left) is enormous and it looks tiny next to a D90. Considering they are relatively rare (in the US) I just haven't had a chance to come to terms with their scale. Those wagons must be giants.
For reference, here is what my car looks like next to a forester.
EDIT: also, have you priced out a D90 lately? I could get nearly 8 of my cruisers (what I paid) for the price of that D90. Easy choice. 50 grand! for a decent D90, that would built one hellava 80 series cruiser.

Whoa. That's imposing.
I'll take two.

It's very short, though, and there's a lot of visual effect from being so squared-off.. My Series II is the same form factor, if an inch or two less in track width, but due to the aluminum, it only weighs like ~2600lb.

not that short.
161 inches, vs 153 for a 2 door wrangler and 173 for a 4 door.
2 feet shorter than an 80, but only 2 inches narrower.
And 3900 lbs its pretty light (about 1000 lbs lighter than mine) but its not exactly svelt.

a D90 was on the truck when my Civic was shipped to me, I wanted it very very badly

But they are small?
To me, anyways. I'm used to Scouts and Blazers.

It's definitely tall and wide, but that 90" wheelbase keeps it just as useful as a Wrangler off road. I just wish they were more affordable here.

Some trivia on LR sizing:
Land-Rovers upsized slightly from the Series I to the Series II, in part due to customer demand. The form factor then stayed the same from 1958-present. The Series I was about the same size as a CJ +5% or so. The primary increase was, as you note, a width increase.
The Series II when stripped down in basic trim was about ~2600-2800lb curb weight. It picked up probably ~200lb in the change to the Series III, then a good bit more in the Defender - partly because of using more metal in the body of a lesser stiffness (no more aircraft "Birmabright"). A full-equip Ninety (at the time, pre-Defender) from the 80s went to about 3500lb, and the modern ones are the 3900 you cite. Part of that comes from little things: steel doors for crash safety, heavier roof framing and support, and a higher level of trim as base.
Where a lot of the effect of small-ness at a distance/bigness close up comes from is roof height. LRs have always been very tall. The point being, if the weight of the vehicle is all down low, why not build a roof as tall as is needed? The Series II was almost 7ft tall with a safari top, and the Defender sits a few inches higher. When that tallness sets off against the short overall length, it looks a lot smaller.
